My Attempts at Book Review Writing (for Rebecca)
I am not sure if this is allowed on this forum, but I just wanted to post this to receive constructive feedback on my book review writing skills. [One of my favorite book passages]: “Rebecca, always Rebecca. Wherever I walked in Manderley, wherever I sat, even in my thoughts and in my dreams, I met Rebecca. I knew her figure now, the long slim legs, the small and narrow feet. Her shoulders, broader than mine, the capable clever hands. Hands that could steer a boat, could hold a horse. Hands that arranged flowers, made the models of ships, and wrote ‘Max from Rebecca’ on the fly-leaf of a book. I knew her face too, small and oval, the clear white skin, the cloud of dark hair. I knew the scent she wore, I could guess her laughter and her smile. If I heard it, even among a thousand others, I should recognize her voice. Rebecca, always Rebecca. I should never be rid of Rebecca.” Daphne's prose on the psychological atmosphere of the Manderley estate is breathtakingly vivid-uniquely beautiful, yet haunting. Through the eyes of the unnamed narrator, main alias as Mrs. de Winter, readers are surrounded by the unsettling absence of Maxim de Winter's late wife, Rebecca. Rebecca never makes an entrance, but Mrs. de Winter finds it difficult to distract herself by everything that still retains her name. How one's nonexistence becomes an eerie presence somehow and how Daphne expresses its effects on the trajectory of everyone's lives is wonderfully written. I must warn others to surrender yourself to this book's slow and deliberate rhythm as Daphne's writing encapsulates you as long-buried secrets gradually surface. Rebecca is a rare gem on my bookshelf embedded with a gripping plot riddled with central themes around self-identity, memories, and obsession. Admirable beauty in writing that will stay with you indefinitely after the final chapter. ~ Maria Kim (an avid book reader while my boys are taking a nap)
