The du Maurier Fowey Literary Festival - Tuesday 13th May
Daphne du Maurier
Today is the anniversary of Daphne du Maurier's birth on 13th May 1907, so this is a special day at the du Maurier Fowey Literary Festival.
Serena Trowbridge
This morning, the festival begins with Serena Trowbridge's reading group, discussing Don't Look Now by Daphne du Maurier, in Fowey Parish Hall at 9.30am. We are sure this is going to be an interesting discussion focusing on the short story form and Daphne du Maurier's handling of complex and often disturbing subjects.
Chrissie Le Marchant leads the second of her Daphne du Maurier's Fowey walks, where she takes in the local landscape that inspired so much of Daphne's writing. The walk starts at 11am at Fowey Town Hall.
Patrick Galbraith
Also at 11am in Fowey Town Hall Patrick Galbraith presents his talk, Uncommon Ground, in which he talks about his book of the same name which explores the idea of land and place weaving together stories of the landscape that defines us, the tensions between conservation and development and what it means to call a place home.
At 12.15pm in Fowey Parish Church, Truro Senior School Musicians are having a lunchtime recital. This event is free, but donations to the Fowey festival funds would be much appreciated.
Nicola Tallis
Nicola Tallis presents the first afternoon event at 2pm in Fowey Town Hall, when she talks about her book about Elizabeth I, Young Elizabeth: Princess, Prisoner, Queen.
Jon Stock
At 4pm, in Fowey Town Hall, Jon Stock talks about his book, The Sleep Room, a chilling exposé of Dr William Sargant's bizarre psychiatric treatments inflicted on hundreds of women with mental illness.
Kate Williams
Patron Kate Williams presents her talk, based on her book, The Royal Palaces – Secrets and Scandals, at 6pm in Fowey Town Hall.
This evening is the Festival's first ever Quiz Evening, at 8pm in Fowey Town Hall. Whether you're a fan of literature, art, Cornwall, Daphne du Maurier, music or just a trivia enthusiast, this quiz evening will challenge and entertain you with questions across a wide range of exciting topics. Come as a team, or join one on the evening. There will be quiz prizes and a raffle. The Festival bar will be available throughout the evening.
