The Manderley Suite by composer and musician Jonathan Stich

Jonathan Stich, a composer and musician, living in Switzerland, is a massive admirer of Daphne du Maurier and her writing.  Inspired by Rebecca, he has written a composition for violin and piano entitled the Manderley Suite.  The piece leads one through the story and echoes the characters and their passion with haunting melodies and rhythmical patterns, in a romantic and almost cinematic way.  The music captures the atmosphere as Jonathan felt it while reading the novel.

Jonathan, and violinist Iris Ewald-Tillner, wanted to perform the Manderley Suite this year, but, of course, the pandemic made that impossible.  Instead, he decided to release part of his composition on Youtube.

You can listen to Manderley, from the Manderley Suite, by clicking here: https://youtu.be/sUSWfT4r-w4

In the section you are listening to, the melody follows the long driveway, passes wildly sprawling rhododendrons and arrives finally at Manderley.  The estate presents itself in its full splendour.  Rebecca’s presence overshades the beauty and transforms the grand estate into a sinister prison.

We are sure you will agree that this is a most beautiful and atmospheric piece of music, and we thank Jonathan for sharing it with us.
