Photographs of Daphne du Maurier in 'Women in Trousers' project archive

We were pleased to see the wonderful photographs of Daphne du Maurier that her son, Kits Browning, has contributed to the archive of a new academic project called 'Women in Trousers'.

Wearing trousers as a woman has often been seen as an act of rebellion against traditional stereotypes of female behaviour and dress. Daphne du Maurier certainly asserted her independence by wearing trousers and doing the things she loved, from striding across the coastal landscape of Fowey and the Menabilly estate to sailing her boats, as we see in this photograph.

The project is being run by researchers at Cardiff University and director Becky Munford is currently writing a literary and cultural history of women in trousers. The project are keen to receive photographic submissions. You can find out more on their website here and click here to see the photographs of Daphne and the other women featured.
