The Birds adapted for theatre by Conor McPherson at theatres in Malvern and Worcester – October 2026
The Swan Theatre Amateur Company (STAC) is performing The Birds, adapted by Conor McPherson, from the short story by Daphne du Maurier. The play will be performed at two venues in Malvern and Worcester during October.
Conor’s adaptation is substantially different from the original short story and from the immensely famous Alfred Hitchcock film adaptation of The Birds. In Conor’s adaptation, strangers Nat and Diane take refuge in an abandoned house by the sea as relentless flocks of birds attack at high tide. With dwindling supplies and growing fear, their fragile sanctuary is threatened further when a young woman with secrets arrives.
This suspenseful, claustrophobic adaptation explores survival, trust, and the darkness within. While the play veers somewhat from Daphne du Maurier’s short story, it still maintains the original's uncertainty and gripping fear.
The cast of Conor McPherson's adaptation of The Birds to be performed in Malvern and Worcester
The Swan Theatre Amateur Company is currently rehearsing, and Gemma Mathews is directing the play.
The play will be performed at The Coach House Theatre, Malvern, from Thursday 1st to Saturday 3rd October at 7.30pm. There is also a matinee performance on Saturday 3rd October at 2.30pm.
Later, in October, the play moves to the Swan Studio, Worcester, where it is performed from Wednesday 28th to Saturday 31st October at 7.45pm.
