Last Night I Dreamt front cover

After much anticipation, Last Night I Dreamt: A Personal History of the du Mauriers by Daphne du Maurier's eldest grandson, Paul de Zulueta, is published in the UK today.

We know Daphne's readers in the US, particularly those who are members of the Daphne du Maurier Society of North America, will want to read Last Night I Dreamt, too, and they will soon be able to do so.  It will be published in the US in the Spring of 2027.

I had the privilege of reading a proof copy of Paul's book a few weeks ago, so I can tell you that this is an exquisitely written memoir of Daphne du Maurier.  But it is also so much more, as Paul includes chapters on other significant members of the du Maurier family and their impact on Daphne's life and writing.  These extraordinary people include Daphne's great-great-grandmother, the infamous Mary Anne Clarke; Daphne's grandfather, George du Maurier, known as Kicky, the Punch illustrator and author; and her father, Gerald, the actor, theatre manager, and matinee idol, whose fame reached its peak during the Edwardian era.

The book is beautifully illustrated with many photographs.  It includes a huge amount of information we did not know before, highlighting how very different it is to read even the best-researched biography compared to one written by a family member, with personal understanding of their subjects and access to family letters and archive material that has not been investigated before.

Here is the book about Daphne du Maurier and other members of her family that you have always wanted to read, and now you can!
