The top five books about the British seaside, chosen by crime writer William Shaw

Brighton Beach

Brighton - the setting for Graham Greene's classic novel Brightain Rock

The days are warming up, and the sun is shining (well, some of the time!), and our thoughts can, at last, turn to summer and days at the seaside.  On that theme, British crime writer Willam Shaw has written an article for The Big Issue that we want to share with you.

The Big Issue magazine exists to give homeless, long-term unemployed and marginalised people the opportunity to earn an income.  To support their work, buy a copy!

William chose five of the best books set by the sea, but as he points out, although the British seaside has proved a fictional hotbed over the years, sailing accidents, seedy goings-on and murders mean it's not always good to be beside the seaside!

But if you are looking for seaside reading matter, what could be better than the five classic titles William has chosen?

We are happy to see that the first book on William's list is Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier.

The remaining four books in William's list of books set by the sea are Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, On Chesil Beach by Ian McEwan, Brighton Rock by Graham Greene and And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie.
