| Camberley/Frimley I live in Surrey heath and a neighbour of mine , says that Daphne and her family lived in camberley area and it’s where she wrote most of “Jamaica Inn “.. Is this true ? As of the many books I have read about her life and even the latest one by her grandson there is no mention of this ? Many thanks | Fri 23/10/26 11:33 AM |

Yes, Daphne du Maurier and her husband Frederick Browning, known to his family as Tommy and to his colleagues as Boy, did live at The Rectory in Frimley for a brief period of time between 1934 and 1936, and Daphne did write a most of Jamaica Inn while she was living there. There are references to this in two of her biographies. The first references are in Daphne du Maurier, written by Margaret Forster. The relevant pieces begin on page 110, with Tommy, in the role of second-in-command of the 2nd Battalion Grenadier Guards, and the family move to the Old Rectory, Frimley. There are further references on pages 112 and 118. The text surrounding those references to Frimley places Daphne's life there in the context of what else was happening in her life at the time, making it interesting reading. The second references are in Manderley Forever: The Life of Daphne du Maurier by Tatiana de Rosnay. Tatiana's references are much briefer, but helpful, and can be found from pages 130–135. Paul did not reverence this brief period of time in his book, but I am delighted to hear that you have read it, as it is such a beautifully written and fascinating book about the du Mauriers.
