Country Life Mag Nov 26th 2025

The Cornwall Life Magazine dated 26th November 2025

In this week's issue of Country Life Magazine, dated 26th November 2025, you will find a super article about Daphne du Maurier and her fascination with English country houses.  Written by Jeremy Musson and illustrated by Matthew Rice, the article is entitled, To Manderley Again.

This beautifully illustrated six-page article discusses the houses Daphne lived in, including Cannon Hall in Hampstead, where she grew up, and Ferryside, Menabilly, and Kilmarth in Cornwall, where she spent much of her adult life.

The article also looks at the houses Daphne visited as a child, including Slyfield and Milton in Northamptonshire, which had a lasting effect on her and served as the basis for Manderley in Rebecca.  Other houses mentioned in the article are those that held a fascination for her, such as Trelowarren, down by the Helford River, where her friend Clara Vyvyan lived.  The article also looks at how some of the houses that were important to Daphne throughout her life are immortalised in her fiction.

The beautiful illustrations, by Matthew Rice, were specially commissioned and show a number of the houses, including Ferryside, Menabilly and Kilmarth, and some scenes from Daphne's books, including one of Philip Rashleigh and Rachel looking at designs for his gardens, from a scene in My Cousin Rachel.
