The Daphne du Maurier Society of North America – September 2026 event

The Daphne du Maurier Society of North America is holding its next event on Saturday 19th September. The subject will be the use of male narrators in Daphne du Maurier’s work.
The day begins at 12.30 pm with lunch with the Hamburger Man. Then at 1 pm, Society Vice President, oral historian and writer Leonard Cox will explore Daphne du Maurier’s recurring choice of the male narrator. Was it personal preference, a deliberate literary strategy for probing gender and the constraints imposed on women, or a commentary on the failure of a society dominated by masculinity? Or does her reliance on male narrators hint at something more psychologically complex beneath the surface?
Leonard will discuss how Daphne leads her readers through five of her novels and a number of short stories using the male voice. He will ask whether she preferred the male voice, and if so, why? Leonard will encourage an active discussion on these and other questions.
