Author Joanna Cannon would take Rebecca to a Desert Island

Joanna Cannon

In a recent interview for the Daily Mail Online, writer Joanna Cannon was asked which book she would take with her to a desert island.  Her answer was Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier, which she described as the perfect book by the perfect storyteller.

Joanna explained that she currently has a couple of books on her bedside table that she is reading and has loved books since childhood.  But if she were choosing just one book to take to a desert island and would only have that one book to read and re-read over and over again for the rest of her life, it would have to be Rebecca.

Joanna loves all of Daphne du Maurier’s novels and how she manipulates her readers.  But Rebecca is exceptional in giving you something new every time you read it, which would be an essential consideration if you only had one book.  Imagine sitting under a palm tree while wandering the hallways of Manderley; even if that did mean sharing the company of Mrs Danvers, sounds pretty idyllic to Joanna and us.

Joanna Cannon is the author of a beautiful and thought-provoking memoir, Breaking and Mending: A Junior Doctor’s Stories of Compassion and Burnout and three fantastic novels, The Trouble With Goats and Sheep, Three Things About Elsie, and A Tidy Ending, which was published in paperback last week.
